About Ferrari 550 Maranello
The Ferrari 550 Maranello is a two-seat grand touring coupé introduced in 1996. It marked Ferrari’s return to a front-engined, two-seat V12 flagship after more than two decades of mid-engined Berlinetta Boxer and Testarossa-family models. Positioned above the brand’s V8 sports cars, it combined high performance with greater comfort and long-distance usability.
Its Pininfarina-designed body uses traditional long-bonnet, short-tail proportions. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V12 producing 485 hp, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. A rear-mounted transaxle helped balance weight distribution, while adaptive suspension supported both touring and sporting use. Ferrari quoted a top speed of 320 km/h.
The 550 remained within one model generation and was produced as a coupé from 1996 to 2001. The main factory variation was the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, introduced in 2000 as a limited-production open model with a basic temporary roof. Competition-derived 550 racing cars were also developed outside Ferrari’s regular road-car programme.
Known for its restrained styling, gated manual gearbox and flexible V12 performance, the 550 established the format followed by later front-engined Ferrari flagships. It was succeeded by the updated 575M Maranello in 2002.
