About Ferrari 512 BB
The Ferrari 512 BB is a two-seat, rear-mid-engined berlinetta produced from 1976 to 1981. It replaced the 365 GT4 BB and occupied the top performance position in Ferrari’s road-car range, alongside the more touring-focused front-engined models. The name refers to its approximately 5.0-litre, 12-cylinder configuration, while BB stands for Berlinetta Boxer.
Its longitudinal flat-12 engine displaced 4,943 cc and used four triple-barrel carburettors, producing 360 hp through a five-speed manual gearbox. Compared with the 365 GT4 BB, the 512 BB offered greater torque and smoother power delivery. It retained a low Pininfarina-designed body, tubular steel chassis and compact two-seat layout, giving it the proportions and mechanical character associated with Ferrari’s early mid-engined 12-cylinder road cars.
The 512 BB was the middle model in the three-car Berlinetta Boxer line. It was followed in 1981 by the fuel-injected 512 BBi, while the competition-focused 512 BB LM was developed for endurance racing rather than as a normal road trim. Ferrari produced 929 road-going 512 BBs. The model is known for its carburettor-fed flat-12, distinctive wedge-shaped styling, limited production and important place between the original 365 GT4 BB and the later BBi and Testarossa.
