About Ferrari 458
The Ferrari 458 is a two-seat, mid-rear-engined sports car introduced in 2009 as the successor to the F430. It occupied the core V8 position in Ferrari’s road-car range, offering a more focused alternative to the brand’s front-engined grand tourers. Production continued until 2015, when the turbocharged 488 GTB and 488 Spider replaced it.
Built as a single model generation, the 458 used a 4.5-litre naturally aspirated V8, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and rear-wheel drive. The original 458 Italia coupé was joined by the 458 Spider in 2011. The Spider combined open-top bodywork with a retractable hardtop while retaining the same basic mechanical layout.
Ferrari expanded the range with the more track-focused 458 Speciale in 2013. It featured increased power, lower weight and revised aerodynamics and chassis systems. The open-top 458 Speciale A followed in 2014, with production limited to 499 examples. Competition derivatives included the 458 Challenge and racing versions developed for GT categories.
The 458 is especially known for its high-revving engine, rapid transmission, responsive handling and close connection between Ferrari’s road and racing programmes. It also marked the final naturally aspirated model in the company’s long-running series of mid-engined V8 production cars before the move to turbocharging.
