About Ferrari 456
The Ferrari 456 is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 grand tourer introduced in 1992 and produced through 2003. It restored a V12 four-seat coupé to Ferrari’s range after the 412 and was later succeeded by the 612 Scaglietti. Rather than serving as a stripped-out sports car, it occupied the long-distance GT role, combining high performance with rear seats, useful luggage space and a discreet character.
Pininfarina shaped the 456 with a long bonnet, flowing roofline and retractable headlamps, drawing on classic Ferrari proportions. Power came from a 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V12. Early 456 GT models used a six-speed manual gearbox, while the 456 GTA added a four-speed automatic, broadening its role as a luxury touring car.
The range represents one model generation with a significant update rather than a complete redesign. Introduced in 1998, the 456M—short for Modificata—brought revised styling, cabin changes and other refinements. It was offered as the manual 456M GT and automatic 456M GTA. The 456 is known for its understated design, smooth V12 performance and unusual blend of Ferrari pace with four-seat practicality. Within the marque’s 1990s and early-2000s line-up, it stood as the elegant touring counterpart to Ferrari’s more overtly sporting two-seat models.
