About Ferrari 412
The Ferrari 412 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 grand tourer produced from 1985 to 1989. It was designed for long-distance performance and greater passenger comfort than Ferrari’s more focused two-seat sports cars, placing it at the refined, luxury-oriented end of the marque’s range. Its restrained three-box body was developed by Pininfarina.
Rather than beginning a separate model family, the 412 formed the final evolution of the closely related 365 GT4 2+2, 400 and fuel-injected 400i line that began in 1972. Updates included body-coloured bumpers, revised exterior details, a raised rear deck for additional luggage space and new wheels. Production ended in 1989, with the front-engine V12 2+2 concept returning in the Ferrari 456 in 1992.
Power came from a fuel-injected 4.9-litre V12, paired with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic. Bosch anti-lock brakes were also offered, marking Ferrari’s first use of ABS. The 412 is known for combining traditional V12 performance with four-seat accommodation, a substantial leather-trimmed cabin and understated styling. Only 576 examples were produced, making it a relatively uncommon representative of Ferrari’s classic grand touring range.
