About Ferrari 400
The Ferrari 400 is a front-engined 2+2 grand touring coupé introduced at the 1976 Paris Motor Show. It replaced the 365 GT4 2+2 while retaining its restrained, angular Pininfarina body style and emphasis on long-distance comfort. Within Ferrari’s range, it offered a more discreet and practical alternative to the brand’s mid-engined sports cars, combining V12 performance with four-seat accommodation and a well-appointed cabin.
All versions used a 4.8-litre V12 mounted longitudinally at the front. The original carburetted range comprised the five-speed manual 400 GT and the three-speed 400 Automatic. The latter was particularly significant as Ferrari’s first production model offered with an automatic transmission, reflecting the car’s luxury touring role.
In 1979, the range evolved into the 400i, with Bosch mechanical fuel injection replacing the Weber carburettors. Manual and automatic variants remained available until production ended in 1985, when the related Ferrari 412 took its place. Rather than representing several separate generations, the 400 was a major stage in the long-running 365 GT4 2+2, 400 and 412 model family. It is known for understated styling, a spacious cabin by Ferrari standards, strong V12 touring ability and the unusual availability of an automatic gearbox.
