About Ferrari 308
The Ferrari 308 is a two-seat, mid-engined sports car produced from 1975 to 1985. Introduced as the 308 GTB, it placed a transverse 2.9-litre V8 in a compact Pininfarina-designed berlinetta built by Scaglietti. It became a central part of Ferrari’s road-car range, positioned below the larger 12-cylinder grand tourers.
The original GTB was a fixed-roof coupe, while the 308 GTS, launched in 1977, added a removable roof panel. Early GTBs used glass-fibre bodywork before production changed to steel and aluminium panels. The first cars had Weber carburettors; the GTBi and GTSi introduced fuel injection in 1980, and the 1982 Quattrovalvole versions adopted four valves per cylinder. The principal GTB and GTS variants retained rear-wheel drive and a five-speed manual gearbox. These updates represent the main phases of a single model generation rather than complete redesigns.
The 308 is known for its low wedge profile, side air intakes, compact proportions and direct mechanical character. Its visibility in popular culture, particularly in GTS form, made it one of the most recognisable Ferraris of its period. It also established the template for Ferrari’s long-running line of mid-engined V8 sports cars and was succeeded by the closely related 328 in 1985.
