About Ferrari 296
The Ferrari 296 is a mid-rear-engined, two-seat plug-in hybrid sports car. Introduced as the 296 GTB in 2021, it opened a new V6 era for Ferrari road cars. Its name refers to the engine’s 2,992 cc displacement and six cylinders, while GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The 296 GTS, revealed in 2022, added a retractable hardtop.
Both versions combine a 120-degree twin-turbocharged V6 with a rear electric motor, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and rear-wheel drive. The system is known for blending strong hybrid performance with compact dimensions, agile handling and limited electric-only driving. An optional Assetto Fiorano package gives the GTB and GTS a more track-focused specification.
The 296 has one main model generation, expanded in 2025 by the 296 Speciale coupé and open-top 296 Speciale A. These higher-performance versions feature more power, reduced weight, revised aerodynamics and a dedicated chassis set-up. The original GTB and GTS began phasing out during 2026 as the Speciale models entered production.
Within Ferrari’s range, the 296 occupies the core mid-engined sports-car position, combining everyday road usability with advanced hybrid technology. The platform also supports the non-hybrid 296 GT3 and 296 Challenge competition cars, underlining its close connection with Ferrari’s racing programmes.
