About Ferrari 208
The Ferrari 208 was a family of compact-displacement, mid-engined sports cars produced mainly for the Italian market from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Its 2.0-litre V8 was created to keep the car below an Italian tax threshold that penalised engines larger than two litres. This placed the 208 beneath the related 308 models while retaining much of their chassis design, styling and driving character.
The first version was the Dino 208 GT4, introduced in 1975. This Bertone-designed 2+2 coupé combined angular bodywork with a transverse mid-mounted V8 and five-speed manual transmission. It later adopted Ferrari badging and remained in production until 1980.
A second form arrived in 1980 with the Pininfarina-styled 208 GTB coupé and 208 GTS, which featured a removable roof panel. These two-seat models closely followed the design and layout of the 308 GTB and GTS. Initially naturally aspirated, the range gained the 208 GTB Turbo in 1982 and the 208 GTS Turbo in 1983. The GTB Turbo was Ferrari’s first turbocharged road car and raised performance substantially while preserving the tax-efficient engine capacity.
Known for its unusually small V8, specialised domestic-market role and close relationship to better-known 308 models, the 208 occupies a distinctive position among Ferrari’s classic road cars.
