About Ducati ST4
The Ducati ST4 is a sport-touring motorcycle introduced for the 1999 model year as a more powerful and technically advanced companion to the ST2. It combined Ducati’s sporting engineering with a full fairing, a relatively upright riding position, passenger accommodation and provision for luggage. This placed it between the company’s focused superbikes and more conventional touring machines.
The original ST4 used a 916 cc liquid-cooled, four-valve Desmoquattro L-twin derived from the 916 superbike but adapted for road and touring use. The higher-specification ST4S joined the range for 2001 with a 996 cc engine and upgraded chassis equipment. An ABS-equipped variation followed, while later ST4S models received revised bodywork similar to the ST3. The series remained one main generation with progressive updates rather than a complete redesign.
Production of the 916 cc ST4 ended after 2003, while the ST4S continued through 2005. The model is known for combining long-distance practicality with responsive performance, steel trellis-frame handling and Ducati’s distinctive desmodromic V-twin character. Within the brand’s line-up, it served riders seeking genuine touring ability without moving far from a sport-bike feel.
