About Ducati SportClassic

The Ducati SportClassic is a retro-styled motorcycle family that reinterpreted the brand’s early 1970s L-twin road and racing bikes with mid-2000s engineering. Announced in 2004, the range entered production for 2006 and ended with the final GT1000 examples in 2010. It formed a single generation and occupied a heritage-focused position alongside Ducati’s contemporary sport, naked and touring models.

The main versions were the café-racer-style Sport 1000, available in monoposto and biposto forms; the faired Sport 1000 S; the more upright GT1000; and the limited-production Paul Smart 1000 LE. The latter referenced Ducati’s 750 Super Sport, while the GT1000 drew from the 750 GT. A GT1000 Touring variation added a windscreen, luggage rack and other touring equipment.

SportClassic motorcycles are known for slim fuel tanks, round headlights, wire-spoke wheels, steel trellis frames and air-cooled 992 cc Desmodue L-twin engines. Sport versions emphasised a low riding position and café-racer appearance, whereas the GT1000 offered greater comfort and passenger practicality. The combination of period-inspired styling with fuel injection, disc brakes and modern suspension made the family an early example of the modern-retro motorcycle category.
