About Ducati Pantah

The Ducati Pantah is a family of Italian middleweight sport motorcycles introduced in 1979 and produced into the mid-1980s. It marked a major change from Ducati’s bevel-drive twins, using an air-cooled 90-degree L-twin with two-valve desmodromic cylinder heads and toothed-belt camshaft drive. The engine was mounted in a compact steel trellis frame, an arrangement that helped define later Ducati motorcycles.

Rather than having clearly separated generations, the Pantah developed through a series of related road models. The original 500 SL was followed by the larger 600 SL and 650 SL, while 350 cc SL and XL versions served smaller-capacity markets. The 600 TL offered a more road-oriented variation alongside the sportier SL models. Styling, equipment and engine capacity changed, but the core belt-driven twin and tubular frame remained central to the range.

Within Ducati’s line-up, the Pantah occupied the middleweight sporting class and provided a more compact alternative to the company’s larger twins. It is known for agile handling, mechanical simplicity, distinctive L-twin character and close links to Ducati’s successful TT2 racing programme. More importantly, its engine and chassis concepts formed the technical basis for several later Ducati road and competition motorcycles.
