About Ducati Indiana
The Ducati Indiana was a custom/cruiser motorcycle produced in the late 1980s during the early period of Cagiva ownership. It represented an unusual move into a market dominated by American-style cruisers and Japanese custom models, contrasting with Ducati’s established emphasis on sporting motorcycles.
The Indiana used traditional cruiser cues, including a low seat, pulled-back handlebar, forward-set riding position, stepped saddle and teardrop-shaped fuel tank. Beneath this styling were air-cooled desmodromic V-twin engines and chassis engineering derived from Ducati’s existing road bikes, giving the model a more distinctly Italian mechanical character than many contemporary cruisers.
The range comprised 350, 650 and 750 versions. The 350 and 650 used belt-driven Pantah-family engines, while the less common 750 employed a bevel-drive twin. Police-equipped variations were also built in small numbers. The Indiana remained a single basic generation, with differences centred mainly on engine capacity, equipment and market specification rather than major redesigns.
Produced in relatively limited quantities, the Indiana never became a core Ducati line. It is chiefly known as an early Ducati interpretation of the cruiser format, combining relaxed ergonomics with the brand’s V-twin engineering and comparatively agile road manners.
