About Ducati Darmah

The Ducati Darmah is a large-capacity sport-touring motorcycle produced from 1977 to 1982. Introduced as the 900 SD, it combined Ducati’s sporting character with more practical road manners than the contemporary 900 Super Sport. It occupied the middle ground between the brand’s grand-touring twins and its more focused performance models.

Designed by Leopoldo Tartarini, the Darmah used an 863 cc, air-cooled 90-degree L-twin with desmodromic valve operation and bevel-driven camshafts. Its square-case engine, twin-shock chassis and triple-disc braking reflected Ducati’s established big-twin engineering. The angular fuel tank, stepped seat, cast wheels and commonly seen black-and-gold finish gave it a distinctive late-1970s appearance.

The range consisted mainly of the 900 SD and the sportier 900 SSD. Introduced in 1978, the SSD added a half fairing, clip-on handlebars and rear-set foot controls, placing it closer to the Super Sport in riding position and styling. The standard SD remained the more versatile version.

There was one principal generation, with detail changes to the forks, wheels, exhaust system, seat and colour schemes during production. Known for stable handling, strong mid-range performance and greater everyday usability than Ducati’s pure sports machines, the Darmah became an important road model in the company’s bevel-drive twin era. It was replaced by the 900 S2.
