About Ducati 999
The Ducati 999 is a fully faired superbike introduced in 2003 as the successor to the 998. It occupied the top of Ducati’s road-going sport range until the 1098 replaced it for 2007. Designed under Pierre Terblanche, the 999 marked a clear visual break from the 916-derived models, with vertically stacked headlights, sharper bodywork and a double-sided swingarm.
Produced as a single model generation, the 999 received updates to its styling, chassis and engine specification during its relatively short run. Most versions used a liquid-cooled 998 cc Testastretta L-twin with desmodromic valve operation, paired with a six-speed transmission and Ducati’s characteristic steel trellis frame.
The range included the standard 999, the higher-specification 999S and the limited-production 999R homologation model. Monoposto single-seat and Biposto two-seat configurations were offered in some markets and years. Fila and Xerox editions linked the road bike to Ducati’s factory racing programmes.
Known for precise handling, strong mid-range performance and a focused riding position, the 999 was closely connected to Ducati’s World Superbike effort. Racing versions secured rider titles in 2003, 2004 and 2006, reinforcing the model’s position as Ducati’s flagship V-twin superbike of the period.
