About Ducati 998

The Ducati 998 is a high-performance sport motorcycle produced mainly from 2002 to 2004. It succeeded the 996 and became the final evolution of Ducati’s 916-derived superbike family before the 999 took over. Although sold for only a short period, it combined the established styling and chassis layout of the 916 series with Ducati’s newer Testastretta engine technology.

The range formed a single model generation and included the standard 998, higher-specification 998S and competition-focused 998R. Depending on version and market, buyers could also find monoposto single-seat and biposto two-seat configurations. Special variations included Troy Bayliss and Ben Bostrom replicas, the dark-green Matrix edition and the 998S Final Edition.

Positioned near the top of Ducati’s road range, the 998 was designed as a focused superbike rather than an everyday all-rounder. It is known for its liquid-cooled, desmodromic V-twin engine, steel trellis frame, single-sided swingarm and compact, race-influenced bodywork. Its combination of classic 916-family design and later Testastretta engineering gives it a distinct place between Ducati’s 1990s superbikes and the succeeding 999 generation.
