About Ducati 996
The Ducati 996 is a high-performance superbike developed as the successor to the 916. Introduced for the 1999 model year, it retained Massimo Tamburini’s influential body design while adding a larger engine and detail updates. It was replaced by the closely related 998 in the early 2000s, making the 996 the middle model in the 916–996–998 family.
The range centred on a 996 cc, liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin with desmodromic four-valve cylinder heads. Characteristic features include a steel trellis frame, single-sided swingarm, twin under-seat exhausts and a committed riding position. The 996 sat near the top of Ducati’s road range, above the smaller 748, and closely reflected the company’s World Superbike machinery.
Major variations included the standard Biposto two-seat model, the more performance-focused 996 S and SPS, and the limited 996 R. The R introduced Ducati’s Testastretta engine architecture and used a 998 cc engine despite its 996 name.
Produced as a single model generation, the 996 is known for sharp handling, strong V-twin power delivery, distinctive Italian styling and direct links to Ducati’s racing programme. Ducati won the 1999 World Superbike riders’ and manufacturers’ titles with the 996, followed by further manufacturers’ success in 2000 and titles with the 996 R in 2001.
