About Ducati 916

The Ducati 916 is a fully faired superbike produced from 1994 to 1998 after its public debut in 1993. Designed by Massimo Tamburini, it replaced the 888 as Ducati’s flagship sports motorcycle and established the styling and engineering direction later developed through the related 996 and 998.

Its design is recognised for compact bodywork, twin headlights, high-mounted twin exhausts and a single-sided swingarm. A steel trellis frame and narrow liquid-cooled, fuel-injected Desmoquattro L-twin helped combine strong performance with precise handling. The standard engine displaced 916 cc, although specifications varied by year and version.

The main road models were sold in single-seat and two-seat forms, commonly identified as Strada, Monoposto or Biposto depending on market and production year. More focused SP and SPS versions supported racing homologation; the SPS retained the 916 name but used a larger 996 cc engine. Three limited Senna series were also produced with distinctive finishes.

Positioned above Ducati’s smaller sports models, the 916 was closely associated with the company’s World Superbike success. It remains known for its purposeful engineering, influential appearance and importance in defining Ducati’s modern superbike identity.
