About Ducati 900 Superlight
The Ducati 900 Superlight is a limited-production, single-seat sports motorcycle derived from the carburetted 900SS Supersport. Introduced in 1992, it was conceived as a lighter, more focused version of Ducati’s air-cooled road-going sport twin rather than an entirely separate design. Its 904 cc two-valve desmodromic L-twin, steel trellis frame and full fairing place it firmly within the classic 1990s Supersport family.
Early examples are particularly recognised for weight-saving components that were unusual on road motorcycles at the time. These included carbon-fibre mudguards, a glass-fibre solo tail and lightweight composite wheels. Specifications changed during production, with later bikes adopting more conventional wheels and receiving revisions to brakes, suspension and chassis details. The series is commonly divided into Mk I, Mk II, Mk III, Mk IV and Mk V versions, broadly covering the 1992–1996 model years. Red and yellow finishes varied by year and market.
Within Ducati’s range, the Superlight sat above the standard 900SS as a rarer, more specialised derivative, while the liquid-cooled 851 and 888 occupied the higher-performance superbike role. It is known for responsive handling, strong mid-range character, low weight and distinctive Italian styling rather than exceptional outright power. Limited availability and specification differences make originality and market provenance important when comparing surviving examples.
