About Ducati 888
The Ducati 888 is a fully faired sport motorcycle developed from the 851 and positioned as Ducati’s flagship superbike in the early 1990s. It advanced the same Desmoquattro platform rather than beginning a separate design line, forming a direct link between the pioneering 851 and the 916 that followed in 1994.
Its defining feature is an 888 cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin with electronic fuel injection, four valves per cylinder and Ducati’s desmodromic valve system. A six-speed transmission, tubular steel trellis frame, full fairing, sport-focused suspension and disc brakes reflected its close relationship with racing. Comfort and practicality were secondary to performance and precise handling.
The 888 remained within one closely related generation, although specifications evolved between model years. The range centred on the road-oriented Strada, alongside limited Sport Production and homologation-focused versions such as the SP4, SPS and SP5. North American buyers also received the 888 SPO and SPO Limited. Equipment and output varied by version and market.
The model is particularly associated with Ducati’s World Superbike success, including championship-winning 888 race machines in 1991 and 1992. It is known for its purposeful square-edged bodywork, strong racing identity and important place in the development of Ducati’s modern superbike range.
