About Ducati 851

The Ducati 851 is a fully faired sport motorcycle introduced in 1987 and produced into the early 1990s. It replaced the air-cooled 750 F1 at the top of Ducati’s road range and established the technical basis for the brand’s later superbikes. The model was developed during Ducati’s Cagiva-owned period and was succeeded by the closely related 888.

Its defining feature is the 851 cc Desmoquattro engine, a 90-degree V-twin combining desmodromic valve operation with four valves per cylinder, liquid cooling and electronic fuel injection. These technologies represented a major advance over Ducati’s earlier two-valve motorcycles. A tubular steel trellis frame, full bodywork and a focused riding position reinforced its race-derived character.

The 851 formed one evolving model family rather than several distinct generations. Early Tricolore versions wore Italian flag colours, while later red Strada and Biposto models served as the main road-going variants. More specialised Sport Production versions, including the SP2 and SP3, were built with racing homologation in mind and used an enlarged 888 cc engine despite retaining 851 badging.

Positioned as Ducati’s flagship superbike, the 851 is known for linking road production closely with World Superbike competition. Its racing programme delivered Ducati’s first World Superbike riders’ title in 1990 and helped define the performance-focused identity later continued by the 888 and 916.
