About Ducati 749
The Ducati 749 is a fully faired sport motorcycle produced for the 2003–2006 model years. It replaced the 748 and served as the smaller-capacity counterpart to the 999, sharing its basic platform and distinctive Pierre Terblanche styling. The 749 was later followed in Ducati’s range by the 848.
Its 748 cc liquid-cooled Testastretta L-twin uses desmodromic valve operation, fuel injection and a six-speed transmission. A steel trellis frame, focused riding position, stacked headlights and under-seat exhaust defined the model. The high-revving engine delivered less peak output than the 999 but helped position the 749 as an accessible middleweight member of Ducati’s superbike family.
The range represents one main generation, with a noticeable update for 2005 that brought revised bodywork and chassis details. Versions included the standard 749, the black-finished 749 Dark, the higher-specification 749S and the limited-production 749R. Depending on version and market, single-seat and two-seat configurations were offered. The 749R was the most competition-focused model, using a specialised short-stroke engine and premium suspension components.
The 749 is known for precise handling, strong braking, a compact race-derived layout and unconventional styling that clearly separates it from earlier Ducati superbikes.
