About Ducati 748

The Ducati 748 is a fully faired Italian sport motorcycle produced from 1994 to 2002. Developed as the smaller-capacity counterpart to the 916, it brought Massimo Tamburini’s distinctive styling and closely related chassis architecture to the middleweight class. Within Ducati’s range, it sat below the 916 and later 996, offering less displacement but a more rev-focused character.

Power came from a liquid-cooled 748 cc 90-degree L-twin with fuel injection, desmodromic valve operation and four-valve cylinder heads. The model also featured Ducati hallmarks of the period, including a steel trellis frame, single-sided swingarm and committed riding position. It is known for precise handling, strong braking and an engine that performs best at higher revs.

The 748 formed one main model generation, with updates and specialised versions introduced throughout production. The Biposto was the mainstream two-seat road model, while the later S provided upgraded equipment. The SP and SPS were more competition-focused, generally combining single-seat bodywork with enhanced engine and chassis components. The limited-production 748 R was the race-homologation flagship.

The 748 is recognised as the middleweight member of Ducati’s 916-family superbikes. Its celebrated design, focused dynamics and connection to racing give it a distinct place in the brand’s 1990s and early-2000s lineup. It was succeeded by the Ducati 749 for 2003.
