About Ducati 1098
The Ducati 1098 is a high-performance superbike produced from 2007 to 2009. Introduced as the successor to the 999, it restored several visual themes associated with earlier Ducati superbikes, including horizontal twin headlights, a high tail, twin under-seat silencers and a single-sided swingarm. It was replaced in Ducati’s range by the closely related 1198.
Built around a steel trellis frame, the 1098 uses a liquid-cooled Testastretta Evoluzione L-twin engine with desmodromic valve operation. Its compact dimensions, strong torque, low weight and focused riding position reflect its position as Ducati’s flagship road-going sport motorcycle of the period. Race-derived features included powerful Brembo monobloc brakes, digital instrumentation and provision for Ducati’s data analysis system.
The range comprised the standard 1098 and the higher-specification 1098 S, which added upgraded Öhlins suspension and lighter components. The 1098 S Tricolore combined S equipment with an Italian flag-inspired finish. The more specialised 1098 R used a 1,198 cc engine, competition-oriented hardware and early Ducati traction-control technology. A Troy Bayliss edition was also offered.
Produced as one model generation, the 1098 is known for combining traditional Ducati superbike styling and chassis design with contemporary performance. Its racing connection was reinforced by the 1098 R, which won the 2008 World Superbike riders’ and manufacturers’ championships.
