About Dodge St. Regis
The Dodge St. Regis was a full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan offered for the 1979–1981 model years. It replaced the Monaco as Dodge’s largest passenger car and sat above the Aspen and Diplomat in the brand’s range. Production covered one generation based on Chrysler’s R-body platform, shared with the Chrysler Newport, Chrysler New Yorker and Plymouth Gran Fury.
Available only as a four-door notchback sedan, the St. Regis combined traditional American full-size proportions with the downsizing measures adopted by US manufacturers in the late 1970s. Notable exterior details included a broad grille, formal roofline and transparent retractable headlamp covers. Its spacious six-passenger layout and conventional construction suited both private and fleet use.
Powertrain choices varied by model year and specification. They included a 225 cu in Slant Six and 318 cu in or 360 cu in V8 engines, paired with three-speed automatic transmissions. Rather than offering several body styles, the range centred on civilian equipment levels and fleet or police packages.
The St. Regis became particularly associated with police and government service. Its brief production run also reflects Chrysler’s transition from large traditional sedans towards smaller, more fuel-conscious models. After 1981, the more compact Diplomat assumed the role of Dodge’s largest four-door sedan.
