About Dodge Ramcharger
The Dodge Ramcharger is a full-size, two-door sport utility vehicle closely related to Dodge pickup trucks. Introduced for 1974, it used a shortened D-series truck chassis and gave Dodge an entry in the rugged, truck-based SUV class. Most examples had four-wheel drive, although rear-wheel-drive versions were also available. Its body-on-frame construction, ground clearance and broad V8 availability suited off-road, towing and general utility use.
The first generation, produced from 1974 to 1980, is particularly recognisable for its removable roof design. The second generation arrived for 1981 alongside the renamed Dodge Ram pickup, adopting a fixed steel roof, revised styling and gradually updated powertrains. North American sales ended after the 1993 model year, while the model continued in Mexico through 1996.
A distinct third generation was sold only in Mexico from 1999 to 2001. It again used Ram pickup foundations but was offered solely with rear-wheel drive and V8 power. Across its three generations, the Ramcharger occupied the role of Dodge’s large, short-wheelbase SUV, with versions ranging from basic utility models to better-equipped trims. It remains known for its classic two-door proportions, straightforward mechanical design and close connection to Dodge’s truck range.
