About Dodge Raider

The Dodge Raider is a compact, short-wheelbase sport utility vehicle sold in North America for the 1987 to 1989 model years. It was manufactured in Japan by Mitsubishi and was closely related to the first-generation Mitsubishi Montero, known as the Pajero in many other markets. Dodge offered only the two-door body, giving the Raider a distinct role as a small, purpose-built 4x4.

The Raider had a single generation and a brief production run. Its upright body, truck-style construction and part-time four-wheel-drive system reflected the off-road-focused design of compact SUVs from the period. A 2.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine was the main power unit, while a more powerful 3.0-litre V6 joined the range for 1989. Manual and automatic transmissions were available.

Within the Dodge lineup, the Raider provided a smaller and more manoeuvrable alternative to the full-size Ramcharger. It also formed part of Chrysler’s wider use of Mitsubishi-built imported vehicles during the 1980s. The model is known for its compact dimensions, boxy styling, useful ground clearance and genuine four-wheel-drive capability rather than passenger-car comfort or extensive luxury equipment. Its short run and lack of a direct replacement make it an uncommon entry in Dodge’s SUV history.
