About Dodge Omni
The Dodge Omni was a front-wheel-drive subcompact hatchback sold for the 1978–1990 model years. Developed alongside the closely related Plymouth Horizon, it used Chrysler’s L-body platform and marked the company’s move toward smaller, more fuel-efficient front-wheel-drive cars. Its five-door body provided useful passenger and cargo space within compact dimensions.
The Omni remained within one basic generation, receiving mechanical, trim and equipment changes during its long production run rather than a complete redesign. Engine choices varied by year and included four-cylinder units sourced from Volkswagen and Chrysler. Versions ranged from straightforward economy models to better-equipped trims, including the value-focused Omni America offered late in the production cycle.
Its best-known variation was the Omni GLH, introduced for 1984 with performance-oriented chassis and engine upgrades associated with Carroll Shelby. Turbocharged GLH models followed, while Shelby Automobiles produced 500 limited-edition Omni GLHS cars for 1986.
Within the Dodge range, the standard Omni served as an affordable, practical entry-level car, while the GLH established an early American “hot hatch” identity. The model is chiefly remembered for its simple packaging, long production life and unusual combination of economy-car utility with available turbocharged performance.
