About Dodge Monaco

The Dodge Monaco is a discontinued passenger car whose name covered several distinct vehicles. Introduced for 1965, it initially served as Dodge’s premium full-size model and was closely related to the Polara. Early generations used Chrysler’s rear-wheel-drive C-body platform and appeared as sedans, hardtops, convertibles and station wagons. These large, V8-powered models were known for spacious interiors, comfortable road manners and frequent use by police and government fleets.

For 1977, the Monaco name moved to Dodge’s intermediate B-body range, replacing the Coronet, while the larger Royal Monaco briefly continued separately. Coupe, sedan and wagon versions were offered before this series ended after 1978.

The final generation returned for the 1990–1992 model years as a five-seat, front-wheel-drive four-door sedan. Derived from the Eagle Premier, whose development had Renault and AMC roots, it differed substantially from earlier Monacos. A 3.0-litre V6 and four-speed automatic transmission were standard, with LE and better-equipped ES versions available. It occupied the upper end of Dodge’s car range, offering a roomy cabin, restrained styling and more European-influenced engineering than the brand’s traditional large sedans. The Monaco was replaced by the Dodge Intrepid for 1993.
