About Dodge Magnum
The Dodge Magnum name has covered two very different North American vehicles. The original, sold for the 1978 and 1979 model years, was a rear-wheel-drive personal-luxury coupe related to the Dodge Charger. Offered in XE and sport-oriented GT forms, it used Chrysler’s B-body platform and a range of V8 engines. It represented the final period of Dodge’s large 1970s coupes before being replaced by the smaller Mirada.
Dodge revived the name for 2005 as a five-door wagon built in Canada on the LX platform, which also underpinned the contemporary Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. Produced through the 2008 model year, this version combined passenger and cargo space with the proportions and drivetrain layout of a large American performance car. Rear-wheel drive was standard, while all-wheel drive was available on selected versions.
The modern range included SE and SXT models with V6 power, the R/T with a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, and the high-performance SRT8 with a 6.1-litre Hemi V8. A styling and interior update arrived for 2008. Within Dodge’s lineup, the Magnum occupied an unusual position between a practical family wagon and a muscle-oriented large car. It remains best known for its low roof, bold styling, broad engine choice and uncommon blend of utility and performance.
