About Dodge Lancer

The latest Dodge Lancer was a front-wheel-drive, five-door midsize hatchback sold for the 1985–1989 model years. Built on Chrysler’s H-body architecture, a stretched development of the K platform, it shared its basic design with the Chrysler LeBaron GTS. Within the Dodge range, the Lancer was positioned between the compact Aries and the larger 600, combining passenger-car comfort with a practical rear hatch and flexible cargo space.

Power came from four-cylinder petrol engines, including naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.2-litre units, with a 2.5-litre engine added later. Depending on the model year and version, buyers could choose a manual or automatic transmission. The range included standard and better-equipped ES models, while performance-oriented Shelby versions added turbocharged power, revised suspension, stronger brakes and distinctive trim. These variants are among the best-known Lancers today.

The name had previously appeared in two different contexts. From 1955 to 1959, Lancer identified pillarless hardtop versions of several full-size Dodge lines. In 1961 and 1962, it became a standalone compact related to the Plymouth Valiant, offered in several body styles before being succeeded by the Dodge Dart. The 1980s Lancer was unrelated in design and served as a practical, sport-influenced family car before the Dodge Spirit took its place.
