About Dodge Diplomat

The Dodge Diplomat was a rear-wheel-drive mid-size car offered for the 1977–1989 model years. Based on Chrysler’s M-body platform, it arrived as a more formal, better-equipped companion to the Dodge Aspen. After the larger St. Regis was discontinued, the Diplomat became Dodge’s largest passenger sedan.

The range began with two-door coupe and four-door sedan body styles, with a station wagon added for 1978. The coupe and wagon ended after 1981, leaving the sedan as the sole body style through 1989. A major restyle for 1980 formed the second main design phase; later changes focused largely on exterior details, trim and equipment.

Depending on the year, engines included Chrysler’s Slant Six and small-block V8 units. Versions ranged from practical base cars to Medallion, Salon and later SE trims. Closely related M-body models included the Chrysler LeBaron and Fifth Avenue and the Plymouth Gran Fury.

During the 1980s, Dodge moved most of its passenger-car range towards smaller front-wheel-drive designs, while the Diplomat retained traditional rear-wheel drive, a roomy cabin and straightforward mechanicals. It became particularly well known in police, government and taxi fleets, where robust construction and available V8 power suited intensive service. Today, it is chiefly remembered as one of Dodge’s last traditional rear-wheel-drive sedans of the period.
