About Dodge Daytona

The Dodge Daytona was a front-wheel-drive three-door hatchback coupe produced for the 1984–1993 model years. Developed during Chrysler’s K-car era on the related G-body platform, it gave Dodge a practical sport coupe with distinctive wedge-shaped styling and a large rear hatch.

The Daytona remained a single generation but received substantial styling and mechanical updates. Early versions included the base, Turbo and Turbo Z, followed by variations such as Pacifica, C/S and ES. Shelby Z and later Shelby models increased the emphasis on handling and turbocharged performance, while IROC and IROC R/T became the best-known final versions. Engine choices included naturally aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinders, plus a 3.0-litre V6 in later years. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered.

Known for combining hatchback versatility with accessible performance, the Daytona occupied Dodge’s sporty coupe position through much of the 1980s and early 1990s. A major facelift for 1992 replaced the pop-up headlamps with fixed units and revised the exterior styling. Production ended after the 1993 model year. Turbo Z, Shelby and IROC R/T models are particularly notable for their stronger performance focus and place among Dodge’s early front-wheel-drive performance cars.
