About Dodge Dakota
The Dodge Dakota was a mid-size pickup produced for the 1987–2011 model years. It occupied the space between compact pickups and the full-size Dodge Ram, offering easier-to-manage dimensions while retaining body-on-frame construction and useful towing and load-carrying ability. Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive were available, depending on model and year.
Three generations were introduced: 1987–1996, 1997–2004 and 2005–2011. The range included regular-cab, extended Club Cab and four-door Quad Cab configurations, with several bed lengths and a broad selection of four-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines across its lifespan. The final two model years were marketed under the Ram brand following the separation of Ram trucks from Dodge.
The Dakota became especially known for combining mid-size proportions with V8 availability, a feature uncommon among comparable pickups. Notable variations included Sport and SLT trims, the performance-focused Dakota R/T, the limited Shelby Dakota and an unusual factory-backed convertible offered during the first generation.
Within Dodge’s truck lineup, the Dakota served buyers who wanted more capability and cabin choice than a traditional compact pickup without moving to a full-size Ram. Its mix of practical body styles, available four-wheel drive and distinctive performance versions gives it a varied position in Dodge truck history.
