About Dodge Colt
The Dodge Colt was a compact and later subcompact car sold in North America from the 1971 through 1994 model years. It was built by Mitsubishi Motors and marketed by Dodge as a captive import, giving the brand a smaller, more economical alternative to its mainly larger US-designed vehicles.
Across seven generations, the Colt changed substantially. Early versions were derived from the rear-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Colt Galant and offered as sedans, coupes, hardtops and station wagons. The late-1970s range added models based on the smaller Mitsubishi Lancer, while subsequent generations adopted the front-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Mirage platform. Later Colts were primarily hatchbacks, although sedans and coupes appeared in selected years.
Most versions used four-cylinder engines and emphasised low running costs, manoeuvrability and practical everyday transport. The range also included sportier GT and turbocharged variants, while related wagon models provided additional passenger and cargo space. Specifications and body styles varied considerably by generation and market.
Within Dodge’s lineup, the Colt generally served as an entry-level import and helped the company compete in the growing small-car segment. It is best known for combining Mitsubishi engineering with Dodge branding. The model ended after 1994 as Dodge shifted towards the domestically developed Neon.
