About Dodge Aries
The Dodge Aries was a front-wheel-drive family car produced for the 1981–1989 model years. It was one of Chrysler’s first K-cars and shared its basic engineering with the Plymouth Reliant. Introduced when American manufacturers were moving towards smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles, the Aries became an important high-volume model in Dodge’s passenger-car range.
Built in a single generation, the Aries was offered as a two-door coupe, four-door sedan and four-door station wagon. Its transverse four-cylinder engine and space-efficient layout provided useful passenger and luggage room within relatively compact exterior dimensions. Engine choices varied by year and included Chrysler 2.2- and 2.5-litre units, along with a Mitsubishi-supplied 2.6-litre engine on earlier cars. Manual and automatic transmissions were available during the production run.
Trim designations included base, Custom and SE versions, followed later by the more comprehensively equipped LE. The value-focused Aries America appeared near the end of production. A substantial styling update for 1985 brought a revised grille, lighting and exterior details, but the model remained part of the same generation. Wagon production ended after 1988, leaving the sedan for the final model year. The Aries is chiefly known for straightforward design, practical accommodation and its central role in Dodge’s mainstream 1980s lineup.
