About Dodge Alpine
The Dodge Alpine was a Colombian-market family car derived from Chrysler Europe’s Simca 1307/1308 range. Introduced locally in 1978, it was assembled by Colmotores in Bogotá from Spanish-supplied kits. Colombia was the only market where this model carried Dodge branding.
Built in a single generation, the Alpine was a five-door, front-wheel-drive hatchback with fastback styling. Its transverse 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine was paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Independent suspension, a large rear hatch and a folding rear seat gave it comparatively modern road manners, passenger space and cargo versatility for its period.
The Alpine occupied the medium family-car segment, replacing the Dodge 1500 and Polara while competing with models such as the Renault 12. Variations included the more basic Eurotaxi for public-service use and the Alpine 1.5 GT, a late cosmetic version with distinctive paint, trim and body-coloured bumpers but no major mechanical changes.
Production ended in 1981 as Colmotores shifted towards Chevrolet vehicles. The Alpine is chiefly remembered for its European design, spacious and well-finished cabin, practical hatchback layout and advanced packaging, although early mechanical and quality problems weakened its market reputation.
