About Dodge 50 Series
The Dodge 50 Series was a British-built light commercial and medium-duty truck range produced from 1979 to 1993. Built at Dunstable, England, it replaced the Dodge Walk-Thru and occupied the 3.5- to 7.5-tonne gross-weight class between conventional vans and heavier Dodge trucks. Production continued after Renault took control of the former Chrysler Europe commercial-vehicle operation, with later models sold as the Renault 50 Series.
The range was designed as a flexible platform rather than a single body type. Versions included integral panel vans, chassis cabs and chassis cowls in several wheelbases. Outside bodybuilders adapted them into box vans, tippers, minibuses, utility vehicles, mobile workshops and other specialist vehicles. Principal weight ratings included the S35, S46, S56, S66 and S75. Petrol engines were available on some early models, while Perkins diesel units became closely associated with the range. Four-wheel-drive derivatives were also offered.
Two main production phases are generally recognised. A major 1987 update brought revised frontal styling, improved brakes and steering, and Perkins Phaser diesel power. Known for straightforward engineering, a strong conventional chassis and suitability for specialist bodies, the 50 Series became a familiar fleet, public-service and utility vehicle in the UK.
