About Dodge 1500
The Dodge 1500 was an Argentina-built compact family car introduced by Chrysler-Fevre Argentina in 1971. Derived from the British Hillman Avenger, it was adapted for local production and became Dodge’s main medium-sized passenger model in the country. Its conventional layout combined a front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and straightforward mechanical components.
The range evolved through several series and updates rather than completely separate generations. Most examples were four-door saloons, while the 1500 Rural estate joined the line in 1978. Engines included 1.5-litre and later 1.8-litre four-cylinder units. Versions ranged from basic and better-equipped family models to the GT90 and GT100, which offered sportier tuning and appearance.
Within Dodge’s Argentine line-up, the 1500 sat below the brand’s larger Polara-based cars. It was known for manageable dimensions, economical operation, mechanical simplicity and durability, qualities that made it a widely used everyday car. Its practical design and accessible maintenance helped it establish a strong position in the local market.
Volkswagen acquired Chrysler-Fevre Argentina in 1980 and initially continued the model as the Dodge 1500 Series W. From 1982 it was restyled and sold as the Volkswagen 1500, extending the basic design’s unusually long local production life.
