About Dodge 100 Series Commando
The Dodge 100 Series Commando was a British-built forward-control truck range developed from a Commer project within the Rootes Group. Introduced during the 1970s and produced at Dunstable, England, it became part of Chrysler Europe’s commercial-vehicle line and was later standardised under the Dodge name. It was unrelated to the North American Dodge D100 pickup.
The range covered medium-duty and heavier applications, with two-axle rigid trucks and tractor units offered in several wheelbases and weight classes. Chassis could be fitted with box, flatbed, tipper, tanker, refuse, fire-service and other specialist bodies. Most versions used four- or six-cylinder Perkins diesel engines, while selected earlier models offered Mercedes-Benz diesel power.
Two main phases are recognised. The original 100 Series established the familiar compact, tilting cab, while the Commando 2, or Mark II, arrived in 1981 with revised styling, improved trim and numerous mechanical and chassis updates. Its broad specification choices made it suitable for local distribution, construction, municipal work and regional haulage.
The Commando occupied a central position in Dodge’s British truck range, above lighter commercial vehicles and below the largest heavy trucks. Renault acquired Dodge Europe’s truck operations in 1983, continued the design and eventually sold it as the Renault Commando before production ended late in the decade.
