About DeLorean DMC-12
The DeLorean DMC-12 is a two-seat sports coupe built by DeLorean Motor Company in the early 1980s. It was the company’s only production model and remains the vehicle most closely associated with the DeLorean name. Assembly took place in Northern Ireland, with production running for a short period before the manufacturer collapsed.
The car is best known for its brushed stainless-steel body panels, unpainted finish and gullwing doors. Its wedge-shaped design was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro, giving the DMC-12 a distinctive appearance that set it apart from other sports cars of the period. Mechanically, it used a rear-mounted PRV V6 engine and was offered with either a manual or automatic transmission.
The DMC-12 did not have a broad range of trims or body styles. Most differences relate to model-year updates and details such as hood design, interior colour, wheels and minor equipment changes. Cars are generally identified as 1981, 1982 or 1983 models, although production volumes were limited and many vehicles were completed or sold after the factory’s closure.
In the market, the DMC-12 was positioned as a stylish, modern sports car with a premium image rather than a high-performance machine. Its handling, design and unusual construction were central to its appeal, while performance was modest compared with some rivals.
