Brand

About Datsun

Datsun is a Nissan-owned marque with a strong place in Japanese automotive history. It is not currently active as a new-car brand, after Nissan ended production of the revived Datsun range in 2022. Today, the name is mainly associated with affordable classic cars, simple engineering, and Nissan’s early success in export markets.

The brand covered a wide range of vehicles over its lifetime, including small family cars, sedans, wagons, pickups, and sports cars. In many markets, Datsun became known for practical, reliable, and relatively economical vehicles that were easy to maintain. This reputation helped the brand gain recognition in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia before Nissan phased out the Datsun name in favour of its global corporate identity.

Well-known classic models include the Datsun 510, 240Z, 280ZX, Sunny, Bluebird, and the 620 and 720 pickups. The 240Z in particular remains one of the brand’s most recognised cars, valued for bringing accessible sports-car performance to a wider audience. Datsun pickups also built a reputation for durability in both private and commercial use.

Nissan later revived Datsun as a budget-focused brand for selected emerging markets. Models such as the GO, GO+, redi-GO, on-DO, and mi-DO were aimed at entry-level buyers seeking low purchase costs and basic transport. Although that revival was short-lived, Datsun remains a familiar name among enthusiasts and used-car buyers who associate it with straightforward design, value, and Nissan heritage.
