About Daewoo Tico
The Daewoo Tico is a small five-door city hatchback introduced in South Korea in 1991. Based on the third-generation Suzuki Alto, it was Daewoo’s smallest passenger car and occupied the entry-level A-segment below the brand’s larger compact models. Production later expanded beyond South Korea to facilities in Poland, Romania and Uzbekistan, continuing into the early 2000s in some markets.
The Tico remained a single-generation model, although it received updates to styling, equipment and engine specifications. It used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and a 0.8-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Most versions had a five-speed manual gearbox, while a three-speed automatic was offered in selected markets. Carburettor and fuel-injected engines were available depending on year and region.
Trim names varied by market and included PM, DX, SL, SX and DLX specifications, ranging from basic transport to better-equipped versions with features such as body-coloured bumpers and additional cabin conveniences. In parts of Latin America, the model was also marketed as the Daewoo Fino.
The Tico became especially familiar in Central and Eastern Europe, where its low purchase and running costs suited urban drivers. It is best known for its very compact dimensions, light construction, simple mechanical design and easy manoeuvrability. The more modern Daewoo Matiz subsequently took over its role in the brand’s city-car range.
