About Daewoo Royale
The Daewoo Royale was a rear-wheel-drive four-door sedan range built in South Korea and positioned in the upper part of Daewoo’s passenger-car line. The Daewoo name appeared in 1983, following earlier GM Korea and Saehan models, and the main range remained in production until 1991. All Daewoo-badged examples belonged to the later phase of the Royale lineage, based on the Opel Rekord E and incorporating styling elements from the larger Opel Senator.
Rather than progressing through clean-sheet Daewoo-designed generations, the Royale evolved through facelifts, equipment updates and increased local production of body panels. The range was broad: XQ and Duke models provided more affordable entry points, Diesel versions prioritised economy, and the Prince occupied a higher specification level. Salon, Salon Super and Super Salon variants offered more formal styling and additional luxury equipment, while LPG derivatives were available for taxi service.
The Royale is best known as one of Daewoo’s defining executive sedans of the 1980s. Its conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, spacious cabin and restrained appearance reflected its European origins. By covering practical fleet models as well as well-equipped luxury versions, it competed across a wide section of South Korea’s medium-to-large car market. The Daewoo Prince replaced the core Royale line in 1991.
