About Daewoo Maepsy
The Daewoo Maepsy was a compact four-door sedan produced in South Korea during the 1980s. Derived from the Saehan Gemini, it used the rear-wheel-drive architecture of the Isuzu Gemini, which was related to the Opel Kadett C. The Maepsy name appeared under Saehan in 1982 and moved to Daewoo branding in 1983 as the company changed ownership and identity.
Rather than spanning several distinct generations, the Maepsy developed through a series of revisions on the same basic platform. The facelifted Maepsy-Na arrived for the 1984 model year with updated front and rear styling. The range included 1.3- and 1.5-litre four-cylinder versions, with manual and automatic transmissions offered at different stages. An LPG-powered Maepsy Sigma remained in production for taxi use after the regular passenger model ended.
The Maepsy served as Daewoo’s main compact passenger car and competed in a market led by the Hyundai Pony. It was notable for offering an automatic transmission in a Korean compact car when that feature was uncommon. Although it was not the market leader, the model supported Daewoo’s growing manufacturing capability and represented an important bridge between the earlier Saehan era and the more modern, front-wheel-drive Daewoo LeMans introduced in 1986.
