About Daewoo LeMans
The Daewoo LeMans is a compact, front-wheel-drive car produced in South Korea from 1986. It was developed through Daewoo’s links with General Motors and was based on the Opel Kadett E platform. The model gave Daewoo a modern small family car for its domestic range while also supporting the brand’s expansion into export markets.
The range included four-door saloons and three- or five-door hatchbacks. Naming varied by body style and market: in South Korea, Racer was used for the three-door hatchback and Penta5 for the five-door version, while LeMans commonly identified the saloon. Export versions also appeared under several Daewoo and General Motors-associated names. Most models used straightforward four-cylinder petrol engines and conventional manual or automatic transmissions.
The LeMans is generally regarded as a single main generation with an early-1990s facelift, often called the New LeMans. A more extensively restyled continuation later adopted the Cielo and Nexia names rather than LeMans. Within Daewoo’s lineup, the car occupied an accessible, high-volume position below larger saloons. It is chiefly known for practical packaging, simple mechanical design and the combination of established European engineering with Korean production.
