About Daewoo Kalos

The Daewoo Kalos is a front-wheel-drive supermini introduced in 2002 as the successor to the Lanos. Developed in South Korea during Daewoo’s transition into GM Daewoo, it brought a newer small-car design to the range. Italdesign gave it a tall profile, short overhangs and angular details. It sat above the Matiz city car and below Daewoo’s compact family models.

Daewoo-badged versions were sold mainly as a five-door hatchback and four-door saloon, with small petrol engines, equipment levels and transmission choices varying by market. The hatchback combined compact dimensions with a relatively spacious cabin, while the saloon provided a separate boot and a more traditional shape. A three-door hatchback also appeared in parts of Europe after the model moved to Chevrolet branding.

The Kalos is generally identified with the T200 generation. A major T250 redesign later continued the same vehicle family, but usually as the Daewoo Gentra or Chevrolet Aveo rather than a new Daewoo Kalos. The original model was also sold under several GM-related brands worldwide. Within Daewoo’s lineup, it served as an affordable B-segment model and is known for straightforward controls, simple mechanicals, useful interior space for its footprint and distinctive circular cabin details. Its broader significance comes from forming the basis of GM’s widely distributed global small-car range.
