About Daewoo Istana
The Daewoo Istana is a light commercial van and minibus derived from the SsangYong Istana, which entered production in South Korea in 1995. Daewoo-badged examples appeared during Daewoo Group’s brief control of SsangYong in the late 1990s. The model was based on Mercedes-Benz MB100 technology developed through SsangYong’s partnership with Mercedes-Benz.
Produced as a single generation, the Istana was offered in short- and long-wheelbase forms related to the MB100 and MB140 configurations. Variations included cargo vans, passenger vans and minibuses, with seating layouts ranging from small multi-purpose interiors to versions carrying up to 15 occupants. Equipment and badging differed by market, and closely related vehicles were also sold under SsangYong and Mercedes-Benz names.
Most versions used a Mercedes-derived 2.9-litre five-cylinder diesel engine with a five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The Istana was positioned as a practical alternative to Daewoo’s passenger cars and smaller commercial vehicles, serving shuttle, family, delivery and institutional roles. It is mainly known for its large cabin, high passenger capacity, straightforward mechanical layout and unusual combination of Korean production with Mercedes-based engineering. South Korean production of the underlying Istana continued until 2003.
