About Daewoo Imperial
The Daewoo Imperial was a four-door luxury sedan produced in South Korea from 1989 to 1993. It served as Daewoo’s flagship passenger car, positioned above the Royale range and aimed at buyers considering leading domestic executive models such as the Hyundai Grandeur. Rather than being a completely separate design, it represented the most extensively developed version of Daewoo’s rear-wheel-drive Royale family.
The Imperial used General Motors and Opel-derived engineering, with roots in the Opel Rekord and Senator. Daewoo gave it a more formal body treatment, including a distinctive roofline and substantially revised front and rear styling, to establish a more prestigious identity. Its principal specification combined a 3.0-litre fuel-injected inline-six petrol engine with a four-speed automatic transmission, an unusual powertrain within Daewoo’s line-up at the time.
The model remained in a single generation and was not offered in coupe, hatchback or estate forms. Variations were mainly limited to equipment and model-year detail changes rather than separate body styles or major redesigns. The Imperial is known for its imposing late-1980s appearance, traditional luxury-sedan proportions and unusual position as a Korean flagship with European foundations. Its short production run and limited sales made it relatively rare. Daewoo later replaced it with the Honda Legend-based Arcadia.
