About Daewoo Espero
The Daewoo Espero is a front-wheel-drive, four-door mid-size saloon introduced in South Korea in 1990. It represented an important step for Daewoo beyond its earlier licence-built and closely Opel-related models, combining established General Motors-derived mechanical components with a distinctive body designed by Bertone.
Produced in a single generation, the Espero received several detail updates rather than a complete redesign. Depending on the market and model year, it was offered with 1.5-, 1.8- or 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines and manual or automatic transmissions. Equipment levels and engine availability varied considerably between countries. In Spain, the model was also sold as the Daewoo Aranos.
Within Daewoo’s range, the Espero served as a larger family car above the compact LeMans and Nexia. It was positioned mainly as an affordable alternative to established mid-size saloons, with a spacious cabin, large luggage compartment and relatively generous equipment among its practical strengths. Its low, glassy profile and aerodynamic shape gave it a more individual appearance than its conventional mechanical layout suggested.
Korean production ended in 1997, while assembly continued for longer in parts of Eastern Europe. The Espero was subsequently replaced in Daewoo’s expanding passenger-car line-up by newer models including the Nubira and Leganza.
